I would recommend watching the TV series, it 
fleshes out the characters and stories much 
more.  It will still be the most depressing 
series ever, but it makes a lot more sense, and 
it is just as beatiful, if not more, than the 
movie, in my opinion (and this from someone who 
doesn't like cg much). :)
