I've seen Chobits listed at least twice now, and
I completely understand how people can dislike
it. It doesn't move quickly and there are more
than several very cliche things about it. (The
music also isn't terribly stellar, even though I
wouldn't call it "bad" per-se.)
But! I have to say I liked it as a theoretical
example watching a developing mind. I liked
seeing the learning process they put Chii
through, and liked that they recognized how
learning isn't always something exciting on the
surface.
Another reason I liked Chobits was because it
dealt with one of my favorite topics to ponder:
"What does it mean to be human?" My only A++
psycology paper (amongst a horde of C's) was
written on that topic, using the novel "Do
Androids Dream of Electric Sheep" as a center
point. (For those who don't know, this is the
novel on which the movie "Blade Runner" was
based.) In Chobits, was especially intrigued by
the episode involving the man who married his
persocon, how she degraded over time, and how
people refused to recognize this as a legitamate
loss for him. Refeused to recognize her as
anything more than a machine, even though he saw
and treated her as more. At what point are the
electrical impulses in a human brain worth more
than the ones in a "machine"?
Of course, disregarding that topic, it's rare for
me to laugh as hard as I did at the episode where
Hideki has to send Chii out to buy panties. ^_^
All said, Chobits will never be one of my *top*
favorites. . . But I think it's really worth
watching. However, it does need to be given more
than only a couple episodes to "warm up". ^_^;
