Generally, it causes a great divide between the
copiers versus the original pose people.
Myself, I would be pissed to find someone selling
a copy of a cel I own. It wouldn't matter to me
how they'd created it -- if it was created from a
screen capture, or from looking at my gallery
would make no difference to me. (Those who make
exact copies of existing cels often proclaim
their innocence by virtue of the fact that they
made the cel from a screen capture, and not by
looking at someone's gallery. But as I see it,
that's nothing more than splitting hairs.) It
also wouldn't matter to me if the fancel were
marked or signed or not.
The only fancels I consider appropriate to sell
are original poses or fancels from screen
captures for series that are completely computer
colored -- for which there ARE no real cels. Even
given that, since the characters are not the
property of the artist, you're still in a legal
grey zone. . . But I'm not a lawyer.
