I may get lynched for saying this... (Thu May 29 21:34:54 2003 )

But I don't see that your husband did something
that bad. There are way too many cel collectors
out there who think that just because they're so-
and-so's NUMBA ONE FAN!!!!!1! that they deserve
every good cel of that character, regardless of
their ability to pay for it. Two examples:

1. About 3 years ago, at the height of the DBZ
madness, I had a trio of cels of Jinzouningen
Juunanagou up on my site. A girl wrote to me
begging, pleading for me to sell them to her. She
claimed that she was his top fan ever, and even
gave me a link to a page full of awful fanfiction
that she had written about him to prove it. She
also included an offer, which she called generous
and fair: "between $5 and $80 for the whole
set." This girl knew full well how much they
were worth, since she said she had been trying to
get a cel of him for months, and had always been
outbid or too late to an update to snag one. I
told her bluntly that $80 for the set was crazy,
and $5 was just rude. Oddly enough, she never
wrote me back. ^-~ I have since sold the trio
off, and let's just say I got a bit more than $5
for them.

2. Last summer, someone wrote to me to say that
they really loved a genga of mine, since it was
so funny and awesome and etc. etc. He swore up
and down that he would die without it, that he
NEEDED to have it, and that he would pay anything
for it. Being that I needed some cash to go to
AXNY, I told him that I really, really did not
want to sell it, but that if he was willing to
make a high offer, I might be convinced to pry it
out of my collection. I emphasized to him several
times that I DO NOT HAVE A PRICE IN MIND SINCE I
NEVER PLANNED ON SELLING IT EVER, BUT THIS WILL
NOT BE CHEAP SINCE I LIKE IT A LOT, AND IF I
DIDN'T NEED A LOT OF MONEY RIGHT NOW I WOULD NOT
BE HAVING THIS CONVERSATION WITH YOU. He ended
offering me less than I paid, which was not all
that high given that I got it at one of the Taro
sales. I wrote back to him and said that I wasn't
sure what constituted ANYTHING YOU WANT ANYTHING
ANYTHING TAKE MY FIRSTBORN in his state, but up
in the Northeast our cost of living is a little
higher than that ^-~. He promptly counteroffered
with $35, and I just ignored him from then on.

Now, this may make me look like a jerk, and I
readily admit that I am a jerk, but these people
knew full well what they were getting into when
they contacted me. Just because they were trying
to rip me off by assuming they could score a
cheap kick-ass cel if they just gave me a sob
story doesn't mean they don't deserve my ridicule
and scorn. I have had people write to make offers
on other cels I have, and I have had a few
newbies ask if I would sell something to them,
and if so for how much--those people who are
serious about dealing fairly and respectful of me
and the cels I've got are people I'm more than
happy to deal with. If someone makes an offer
that's lower than I wanted, I'll tell them that I
was hoping for a bit more, and ask if they would
be willing to pay X based on how much similar
cels have gone for or how much I paid; if they
don't want to pay that, there's usually someone
else who is willing to. In the end if always
works out, one way or another.

Myself, I don't think I've ever made a stupid
newbie offer. Every cel I've made an offer on,
I've gotten; not necessarily for my opening
price, but eventually at a price I can live with.
(Occasionally, people have even said, "Well, I
paid x-10 [where x is the amount I offered], so
go ahead and pay me x-10." I'm always duly
floored and make sure to pay them ASAP!) But
then, I don't go up to people with Saitoh cels
and demand they sell them for $50--no matter how
hard I wish that every Saitoh cel cost $50.
