Sailor Moon cont'd: Let's move on to the senshi.
We have the lesbians, Uranus and Neptune (Haruka
and Michiri...Amara and Michelle in the dub,
respectively (changed to cousins for American
audiences)). Uranus is strong, hysterically so,
along with Neptune, and they have their own sense
of morals separate from the Inner Senshi. They
almost kill Usagi ("Serena") more than once in
their distrust of her. Then there's Setsuna.
She's sentenced to an eternal of loneliness,
forbidden to see other people. Ever. And yet she
still fights for the queen that sent her there.
And with a whole lot of power, too. And now onto
the most enthralling senshi, the senshi of
Death...Saturn. A character with a weak body and
a psychotic father, as well as a dual personality
syndrome. One personality wants to protect the
world, and the other personality wants to destroy
it. The evil personality wins. Most of the S
season consists of Neptune and Uranus trying to
find and KILL Saturn. They could care less about
innocent people. I won't even go into Stars and
the fact that men tranform into women ^^
Big O: To tell the truth, with my hatred of
American produced anime, I never even bothered to
watch the dub of this one. The animation looked
awesome, though, from the bits I saw, so I really
can't see where you say the animation was
lacking...and it seemed to have a very nice
atmosphere to it, akin to "Steam Detectives". The
mecha looked nice enough, too.
Dragon Ball: A classic action anime. Many people
find the interesting and jarring character design
appealing, because they do not strive to
be "pretty" just for the audience...this anime is
trying to say "strong men would LOOK that way".
The fact that we have Vegeta, practically a
villian, fighting along side with Goku and
Piccolo (who is allied with no one, only fights
when it benefits him) for most of the series is
something very interesting to see. Also, this
series plays with the very desirable time travel
concept...son from the future comes back and
meets his unknowing father and mother...in this
case, Trunks meets Bulma and Vegeta. This concept
is desirable because it is very fan pleasing. Now
add lots and lots of action, lots of angst, and
sometimes disgusting gore, and you have a series
set to please a large contingent.
Cowboy Bebop: Right...I REALLY don't think you
paid attention to this one. The main characters
in this series are ALL adults, save Ed. If bounty
hunters, sexy vixens who have been cryogenically
frozen, gansters, hermpahroditic drug dealers, ex-
cops with prosthetic arms, computer geeks, and
really really messed up pasts aren't your thing,
I could understand...but this show was NOT made
for kids. Despite the fact that Cartoon Network
bills their run as "unedited" this is NOT true.
They edited out a lot ^^ Like said hermaphroditic
drug dealer's breasts are at one point shown,
when we find out he is NOT a he ^^ (They also
edit out how he got that way. He was sent to
prison at the end of a war. There, he got
addicted to a drug in order to cope, and it
changed his physiology. NOW he deals the same
drug on the streets). There's even an episode
where Ed eats mushrooms and hallucinates. Not to
mention the fact that the life of a bounty hunter
entails much death, as well as seduction, in
order to get your victim. Yet in the end, this
series boils down to the simplest things: love
and friendship. The entire series could be summed
up in those two words. Now tack on awesome music
by Yoko Kanno and you've got a winner.
