I like your profile even better! ^_^ Azungu is a word found in most bantu languages (a family of languages found mostly in southern and eastern africa), although I picked it up in Malawi (don't worry if you've never heard of it - I didn't make it up, its just so tiny and insignificant as far as tourism and exports that most people haven't heard of it) I usually hate explaining the meaning, cause it sounds almost racist (its NOT), but I might as well get it over with here. Azungu means "white person" - when I was in Peace Corps, all the kids would come chasing after us shouting "Azungu! Azungu!" (usually followed by a request for money!). Well, we all got used to it, and picked it up ourselves - if we saw another volunteer somewhere, we'd shout "Azungu!" to get their attention. Also, I lived in a town called Kasungu, and every year I held the "Azungu in Kasungu" party (which I understand is still going on 8 years after I left!). So, when I got home I just started using it as a nickname, because I knew no one else would be using it! I even have it as my personalized license plate now!! Az - you happy now?? ^_^ |
