Hmm,
I still disagree on a lot of your points. I
went to school for 3d animation. In my classes,
I had to do both traditional and digital
animation. Something that I really find
annoying (not saying you are doing this, Im just
stating this as a generalization) is when people
think that digital art is less of an art style
than hand drawn or painted things. This is a
huge misunderstanding. It takes just as much
time, patience and talent to do digital art as
it does traditional art. In fact, it takes
longer most of the time, simply because the
computer gives such amazing control, it takes
more time to master. My digital pics take me a
lot longer to do than my hand drawn pics used
to...and, the art looks better, cleaner,
mistakes can be fixed, colors can be changed in
an instant, better effects can be added, etc.

Hmm about CG not fitting Watase's detailed style
of art.... CG offers just that...incredible
control and detail, sharpness, etc. I think her
art would look fine. CG doesnt have to be
hardlined either. There are painter programs
out there that can imitate watercolors perfectly.

As for some of the newer shows not looking so
hot...well, that's to be expected. There are
cel shows out there that I think look horrible
too. CG is a very new field in Japan, it's
going to take time for the studios to master it
completely, which hasnt happened yet. A few
studios, like Gonzo and Madhouse have really
gotten good with it...where as the people who
did the FY OVAs (Pierrot) still need time to
learn. Love Hina was done totally in CG, as was
Maho Tsukai Tai (one of the first all CG shows)
and they looked fabulous! Blood the Last
Vampire was all CG, and OMG, that show is so
stunning to watch..there is no way they could
have done that show as well as they did without
the use of a computer. It still takes time for
the art to be mastered. I agree that
traditional animation and cel painting is an
artform...but, no sense in not progressing with
it. Most animators are more interested in
creating a story and visuals as a whole.. I
think the means by which they get to their
destination is not important. Digital art is
just as painstaking to create, and it still
takes an artist with a good eye to make things
come together. The computer to me, is simply
yet another medium with which to do art.
