There are many overweight people in the US (in
general) but maybe the Japanese people you spoke
to have traveled to the US specifically FOR the
anime cons?  If that's the case, it could explain
why they believe we con-goers are all fat; simply
because they're not exposed to as many overweight
people   in Japan.
