When I was first introduced to cel collecting, it was through
mainstream American animation by my husband. We went down
to a gallery in Newport Beach CA and talked to the gallery
owner there. She was a wonderful lady full of enthusiasm
for the hobby. She gave me the basic rules of what makes a
cel valuable that I still kinda follow with the anime cels
I collect now.

Some of the things she stressed:
1. Both eyes open
2. If it's not a close up, a full figure is more desireable,
not a half figure, etc.
3. Popular character
4. Trademark pose for that character(like Snoopy doing s
his dance)
5. Action. To me a cel is much more interesting if it's
showing good action and looks like it's going to leap out
of the frame.
6. Full-front shot is more desireable than a profile or
3/4 view and certainly better than one from the back.

Anyway, those are some of the guidelines I follow for my
own collection, but I know these certainly don't apply for
everyone. This is a hobby and everyone should have fun
with it. Maybe you like buying cels of character's butts! :)

Posted here below is a cel of Washu that I think illustrates
the values above pretty well. :)
