I don't think there are any books out there on the subject.
As for how to educate yourself. You could ask dealers, other
collectors.
As for what are hanken cels? Well, look for any image in
a magazine, book, pencil board, CD cover, et al., that looks
like it's cel art but doesn't look like it came from the
original videos. There is probably a cel used to produce
that image. That cel is a hanken mono, and it's normally
one-of-a-kind.
However, sometimes a Japanese studio will make reproductions
of their hanken mono. Studio Pierrot,
for example, introduced a limited edition set of repro
hanken cels of Madoka for their 20th anniversary. 10-12 of
them were created...all hand-painted. AIC has also sold
reproductions of their Ah! My Goddess hanken mono in the
past and, I understand, a few in their recent auctions...
all hand-painted as well.
How rare are they? As most of them are one of a kind, they're
very rare. Of course, there are more hanken mono for some
shows than others. Popular, long-running shows will have
many examples of hanken mono, while short-lived or
under-promoted series will have very little.
They range in price from perhaps just over a $1000, to
$8000 for that A!MG hanken mono that Yann referred to, to
perhaps even much more for, say, a Miyazaki hanken mono.
I've never seen an example of a Miyazaki by the way.
