Re: Re: What are your thoughts on International shipping? (Wed Nov 13 14:50:37 2002 )

I have had so many problems with international
bidders: complaints about shipping costs,
refusal to pay (or not paying without letting me
know), misunderstanding on the types of payment
types accepted (IE When the auction CLEARLY says
no credit cards by Paypal, why be pissed off
when you can't send me a credit card payment??),
not speaking English well enough to conduct
business, etc. What I finally did was to put a
disclaimer in my auctions: All international
users must email me BEFORE bidding for payment
and shipping terms or I will flat out cancel
their bid. I really hated to do this because I
have had MANY more good experiences with
international bidders than bad experiences, but
the bad aren't worth the trouble....
Another problem with international users is they
request that you lie on the customs forms. I
don't mind sending the item as a "gift" but I am
not going to fake notes or list the incorrect
value. I actually had one bidder who wanted me
to write "$25" value on the customs form but
insure the item for the actual $200 value!!!
(Come ooonn!!!)
I think a lot of the reasoning for the
misunderstandings about shipping is the
difference between "Airmail Letter" and "Airmail
Parcel". The costs can be QUITE different, with
the letter cost being lower of course.

Just my little babble.
