"Galleries with no comments at all really do bug
me, I must admit. It makes it seem like the
person is collecting just for the heck of it and
doesn't fully appreciate the cels."
(I have no idea what code this board uses for
quotes so sorry it's not quoted right.)
I take offense to comments like this. How many
people collect cels just or the heck of it? Most
people who collect cels, especially people who
have a lot of cels acquired over a long period of
time, probably appreciate their cels. I don't
think a lack of commentary changes that.
On the current version of my gallery I have no
commentary on the cels... yet. I haven't decided
if I plan to keep it that way. My last gallery
had commentary on nearly every cel, but the truth
was coming up with something interesting to say
about the cels actually made it hard for me to do
updates. On some cels there wasn't a good story
on how I got it, and there wasn't anything I felt
I could say about the cel other than listing the
episode it was from or just say how <> looks gorgeous and I love how
<>'s <> looks. Personally
I find generic gushing sort of boring, and I had
enough of it in my other commentary that I
couldn't stand anymore in my gallery.
I mean, I have like 20+ absolute, hands shaking,
heart pounding, nearly screaming dream cels. Does
anyone really want to read how excited and
nervous and freaking out I was 20+ times? I doubt
it.
So my new gallery has no commentary at the
moment. People who know me know a lot about why I
bought or love certain cels. Also, people who
email me about a certain cel usually get a story
or something back in their email regarding that
cel. I don't even have large scan images in my
gallery at the moment. My fun at the moment came
from designing the actual site and then getting
the cels placed in logical categories and
grouping them in an attractive way (I can spend
hours arranging 10 cels over two pages).
I guess it ticks me off that you can say lack of
commentary means someone likely doesn't
appreciate their cels. Well then why did the
person even take the time to scan them all in,
create a website, make banners and such and then
arrange them all aesthetically? Does this mean
people who have no online gallery at all REALLY
don't appreciate their cels? I had no online
gallery for four or five years of my collecting,
and I don't think I loved my cels less back then.
Anyway, as much as I created my gallery to share
my favorite cels with everyone, I really designed
it for me. Most of the decisions I made creating
it, including whether to have commentary and
whether to attach larger scans came from my own
experience looking at other people's galleries
and what I enjoyed seeing. My old gallery didn't
have larger scans either. I personally like the
thumbnail look and seeing cels grouped, and
probably won't ever have huge scans of my cels
online. If you think the way I chose to do this
implies I don't appreciate my cels, you can think
that, but it's wrong.
Also, I agree with the person who says that in
general, the more veteran a collecor is, the less
prone they are to have commentary. There are
obvious exceptions of course. *wave Drac*
Sorry for the long-winded, rambling and divergent
post, but I think I possibly fit the description
of the galleries people are referring to, and you
should know just because we don't say a lot on
our galleries doesn't mean we don't have a lot
(too much?) to say about our cels.
