i have to say i find this thread interesting...
and have decided to curb lurking and theorize
with you lot...
as a relatively new collector, it seems to me
that the only way to acquire wishlist cels of
favourite characters (who seem to be favourites
of just about everyone else, if not simply rare)
from series like fy, trigun, cb, et al, is by
being able to pay high prices. as a collector who
hasn't been as accustomed to the state of cel
collecting, pre-frenzy, it appears that paying
sky-high prices is the norm.
additionally, it's as if saving to purchase dream
cels (or racking up credit card debt, depending
on your specific strategy) is essential when one
wants to collect cels that don't show up often,
on account of other collectors (who have been
collecting longer or more fervently) having
attained cels from favourite shows of favourite
characters.
also, reasonable prices are easier (on occasion)
to attain for a probable buyer when one has
relations within the cel collecting community;
negotiating with friends is easier than doing so
with a total stranger. and if a collector not
part of this community wants a cel desperately,
this also causes the sense of competition to
increase, a result of the idea that there's only
one cel like it because the rest have been
collected.
i suppose i'm just hypothesising... i've been
cursing this cel bug which led me to buy an fy
dream cel at a high price and bid on two of
leigh's for prices i would have previously gawked
at. my father telling me that "patience is a
virtue" keeps haunting me. i do also think that
the credit card availability plays a huge role.
is cel-collecting different in japan, in terms of
prices and atmosphere?
anyway, hello, i'm tania. and i have a cel habit.
i think i need to enforce a resolution to go on
hiatus after leigh's sale is over (i wonder how
much the earthian will go for...). it will be so
very difficult to not keep up with titillating
updates daily though. it's all hotohori's bloody
fault. bleurrgh.
