I think you're missing the point. Yes, the IP
does belong to the studio. However, the scan (not
the copyright) does belong to the person who
scanned it.
Although owning the scan is not a particularly
valuable asset, the scan was still something that
was made by you and therefore is your property.
It's as if you took a photo of a MacDonalds logo
at the restaurant. You don't own the logo, the
restaurant, the arches, or copyrights.
Nonetheless, the photo still belongs to you even
though you can't use it for advertising since the
logo belongs to big Mac.
