Ummm... what's more important to you in the
existance of anime? The show or the post-
production waste (cels)? I think anime is all
about the show, not cels. It's great to get cels,
but keep in mind that cels are not as useful as
CG. Compare the art of Angel Sanctuary to that of
X The Movie. Pretty much the same level, right?
Sure, but do you really think they could keep up
the quality throughout an entire TV series (X)?
Nope, would be insane. Check out Rayearth, the
art sucks. That's what would happen. One eye set
higher than the other, shading being completely
off or left out, movements being static...

When you say "ridiculous", what anime are you
thinking of? Beyblade? Okay, that's a show for
entertaining modest kids and to have them spend
money. A baby pacifier doesn't need quality as
long as the baby suckles it. Fruits Basket? Blame
Takaya, ever read her manga? She started with the
static art, why shouldn't the studio adapt her
anime to her style? I admit that I associate
Furuba with pastel colors and bezier curves...

Also, many cel-based shows suck. I mean, check
Earthian, the animation is so pathetic and the
colors so dark (or RG Veda) that I feel like
denying I ever bought it.
Your post reminds me of someone I knew ;) She
watched TV with us, but she never cared about the
film. The commercials were why she watched TV:
Barbie could be in it. She in fact wanted to
write a petition to the channel to cut out the
crap (films) and only show commercials instead. I
wacked her.
Are you interested in anime only because of the
side-fun, cels? Don't worry, I won't wack you ;)

CG offers way more possibilities. I had to get
used to it first, but now I think it's a good
thing. It's more clean. I don't say cel-based
shows are bad. There are good ones, sure. Miyu
was nicely done. But don't you think that with
CG, the annoying glowing effect of Inuyasha's
gear could have been eliminated? Watch the 2nd
movie, it IS eliminated.
I'm happy with the cels I can get, if I can't, I
have fan cels made.

As for "tradition"... if cels are the good ol'
tradition of creating animation and people love
them for this aspect, sorry. Because I don't
think the creation matters. I think only the
result counts and the result must be good.

I once planned to make a fan tribute to Yuu
Watase by animating one of her novels. I insisted
on cels, but soon I realized I was crazy.
Sketches over sketches. Then manually paint each
damned cel. First buy the acetate and paint. And
everything else. For CG you barely need that. I
quit the tribute idea, but I do want to animate
KAR. And CG. 'cuz I want the quality of AS or X
Movie, but not the work of X the Movie.
And while professionals don't work alone like I
probably will, the aspect of slogging away and
MONEY still counts for them, too. And hey... a CG
based show is finished faster than a cel-based
one, I think.

You cannot expect a production staff who found a
fast, easy and cheap (and GOOD) way of producing
anime to go back to the old means (slow, hard and
expensive) simply because you're after the cels.

Bottom line, to me the anime is more important
than the cels. Most of my purchases are DVDs, not
cels. I'm buying 18-DVD storage boxes on a weekly
base, cel books on a yearly base.

Adfundum.
Anna
