Umm... what did I say to make you so upset?
This is a free service. I'm trying to help people
out here. There is no money involved. I'm not
selling your stuff nor am I doing anything other
than promoting your stuff. There's no banner ads.
Rubberslug creates a framework to upload your own
graphics into so you don't have to deal with
HTML. Not everyone is gifted with the time to sit
down and learn HTML do write one little thing
with it, and I don't blame them. You can very
easily make the sites look reasonably different
from each other. (I will personally help anyone
who wants to do so, just e-mail me.)
If you must know, the server space is from a rack
that I use for other business. It costs $1000 a
month plus $25,000 worth of equipment to run this
rack. I don't HAVE to do this, I did it because I
love cel collecting and want other people to get
into it.
This is called a Good Deed to the Cel Collecting
Universe. I hate to say it, but don't spoil it
for the half dozen people who are already
interested.
I've spent an excess of 80 hours on this (and
arguably, thousands of dollars) for no pay -- all
because I'm having fun and the response so far
has been positive (except this one). I can easily
go spend my free time doing working on something
that pays, or at least will be appreciated.
Perhaps you've brainwashed yourself by "Disney
music"?
As for the database stuff I was talking about,
I'm not going to catalogue any real cels. We're
going to sit down and make a big long list of
shows that have cels and shows that don't. This
first point should cut down on the number of "are
there any cels from show xxxx?" questions here.
Also, for shows that do have cels, most people
would like to know how hard a fight to expect for
these things.
I've had so many friends ask me how much stuff
costs because they honestly don't know. We're not
trying to put a price tag on your cels. We're not
putting a price on any specific cel. We're trying
to educate cel collectors as to what they should
expect going into a cel store, a convention, or
an auction. And it's not me personally who is
going to be coming up with this. It's going to be
volunteers who each give their opinion as to how
much they're willing to pay for certain things
with huge standard deviations and some sort
of "assurance/confidence factor" for safety. I
won't get into the statistics analysis of it, but
rest assured that a rarity index will help people
find what they want without getting ripped off
just because they didn't know what to expect.
These things are Good Ideas that are necessities
for the community. This is an effort to cut down
on exorbitant cel auctions, back-and-forth
sniping, etc. and get back to just enjoying a
hobby that is, without a doubt, becoming harder
to enjoy because of escalating costs and other
barriers to entry. I don't want cel collecting to
be a game only for the rich and people who spend
money only on cels. I think everyone should get
to experience peeling open a cel bag and smelling
the paint and realizing that there's only one in
the world like it -- and you're holding it by two
corners tilting it at the light making sure it's
perfect.
Do I still sound like someone who doesn't
understand what this hobby is about?
Perhaps you misunderstood my initial post. I
invite you to come up with a reason why these
things are not Good Ideas after thinking about
this post for a bit.
For anyone who managed to read down this far, I
invite you all to give it a try.
