I don't know much about VCD's.... but as for
music CD's, Son May, Everanime, Archer, and
possibly York (??) are Taiwanese companies and
according to *a store owner* that my mom asked in
Taipei, these are legal in Taiwan as well - but
only in Taiwan (i.e. selling for profit outside
the country is illegal due to a special
contract?). Obviously I'd be wary of the source of
such information, but it's incredibly easy to ID
bootleg stuff - when it's in front of your face.
^_^' CD's are easier to ID on evilBay because
scans should immediately show that the
copyright/distributor holder is not the original
Japanese company (and "Taiwan" would be on the CD
case). Posters, wallscrolls, shitajiki, and idol
cards are also easily ID'd when fully visible
because there's no copyright, no publisher
sticker, and the quality is generally crappier. Of
course, you'd still have to see the damn thing...
I certainly wouldn't dream of paying $15 for a
bootleg SM CD when I can get it in Taiwan for $3..
^_^' (But that's another story)
Also, Japanese anime companies do seem much more
lax about enforcing copyright issues in other
asian countries (whether it's a technical
difficulty, I don't know). An interesting thing
is that in certain cases I don't believe this
would harm them. Look at all the fan sites with
image galleries, for instance. You wouldn't see
*any* such sites for Disney, Fox, or possibly WB,
but the particular medium of still images is taken
as "public" by fans at large. No cracking down. In
this case it's probably just free advertising.(?)
Yes, video and music are different, and I get
pissed too when I see these absolutely obvious
bootlegs on auction, but the only thing we can do
is complain to the evilBay higher-ups, and do
what we can to educate every potential fan ...
