When something - anything - becomes widely known
and liked, there are bound to be profiteers.
People who watch for tides of interest like this,
milk it for all that it's worth, then desert it
when the popularity or novelty dies down. Often
they don't care two red pennies for the people
who actually are interested in whatever the thing
may be, because the profiteer is usually someone
who isn't involoved any further than buying up
things as cheaply as possible and selling them
for as much as possible.
Cels are a strange thing, since they're one of a
kind and also different people put different
values on what is asthetically pleasing. There is
no real way to say how much a cel is worth until
you sell it to someone. Only then does it have a
value. If a cel was worth $20 to someone selling
it on Yahoo Japan, but worth $200 to someone
bidding on it on Ebay, so be it.
Personally, what I find far more offensive than
people who resell cels for outrageous prices are
the people profiting off of bootleg or imitation
things. I've stated how I feel about fansubs
being sold and I've stated how I feel about the
cheaply printed mousepads and magnets on Ebay,
but this goes on in legitamate retail stores as
well. I was in the mall the other day and
actually saw shirts being sold which had Vash
(from Trigun) and Kenshin on them. . . Nowhere on
the shirts or tags was there even a single word
of credit given to the owners/creators of the
characters. Some colors in the outfits were
changed here and there, but any fan of the show
would know who it was supposed to be. I recognized
those for what they were and left them there, but
they'll only be bought by someone else who wants
something Trigun or Kenshin and wants it cheap
and doesn't care if the creators of the charcters
see any profit from their hard work.
That is what disgusts me the most.
But profiteers aren't too far behind. ^_~
Personally, I usually just leave that particular
rock sitting there instead of moving it and
having to see the things crawling underneath. I
know they're there anyway, no need to look at
them.
Many Sharp Smiles,
