Actually no, I wouldn't sell them for a $100 000.
I'd think it was a waste of the other person's
money, especially for 12 cels.
As for putting money where my mouth is, I have
comic books I know I could make a killing on if I
put them up for auction on ebay. I collected
Miracleman years before anyone gave a damn about
the series. I found a near mint copy of issue 15
for $3. In auction I've seen it go for $80-$50. I
could get a lot of money for it, but I'm not
planning to put it up for sale. I spent too much
time and effort, three years of searching through
back issue bins, to give it up for money.
I remember watching a collector of movie monsters
being interviewed, and he was asked how much his
King Kong model was. The guy looked up at the
camera and said zero. The reason why was because
he was never planning on selling it. It's crazy,
but that sort of made an impact on me. People
talk about people being real collectors only if
they spend X no. of dollars. To me, a real
collector is someone who won't part with
something, no matter how much money is thrown at
them.
Sometimes it is sour grapes to complain about
this, but I think some of the comments express a
real concern about the market. I enjoy repeating
myself ad nausum about speculators, but they can
ruin a market.
As for why dealers are a special case --
sometimes they get cels from Japan and the studio
themselves, things we wouldn't have a chance at
getting if they hadn't have taken this trip. Some
are even willing to explain their mark-ups, like
Yann Stettler. Also, for the most part they love
this hobby -- I'm sure that's why the person who
runs Usagi House has a mailing list, and Yann
runs this site. Speculators don't give a damn
about cels, they love the money involved, and
they'll go to the next profitable hobby if or
when the market crashes. Maybe some of the
dealers will too, but I have a feeling that more
of them will stay then the speculators. Yeah
okay, it's nauseating and sentimental, but in my
mind a person having a passion for the hobby
makes a difference. |
