heh. OT to OT: learning Japanese as a fan (Sun May 7 22:11:30 2000 )

This is funny! :D Actually, slightly related to this thread
is a story my brother told me of one of his semi-otaku friends
(we can get into a discussion of what "otaku" means later).

Many of us pick up these annoying little phrases where? From
anime (or manga). Well, my brother's friend must have been
watching/reading anime/manga for years and years and years
because he actually became semiFLUENT from just being a fan.

He went to Japan, and actually conversed with the locals!!
Not kidding! But everyone thought he was gay.

Why? Because in Japanese I guess there are syntactical
conjugations and the like which are *specific* to gender.
Very HEN (as Sana-chan would say). This guy apparently
learned from the female characters because they annunciate
better and he tends to watch semi-shoujo.

I love that story! Whoo hoo! See, I don't feel it's terribly
wrong or irritating when fans use these phrases as long as
they understand what they mean in context (the "-sama" thing
may be another issue, but it's also a cultural thing).
