Ten years ago, when I first started spending a
lot of time online, I was nine years old and
deeply, deeply in love with Anne McCaffrey's Pern
series.

My first email address had been through PINE mail
and was just a mix of my first and last names.
But eventually I wanted a Yahoo email address, as
Yahoo was, at the time, the newest, coolest
thing. When it came time to sign up for one, I
wanted 'Weyrwoman', as that was the title held by
my favorite character in Pern- Lessa. But that
was already taken, so I went with Weyrlady. I
spent some time in chat rooms, made some friends,
and followed them to message boards where I kept
the same handle. And, because so many people
knew me as Weyrlady by then, I just kept it for
everything else I joined.

There are a few places where I changed the name
as appropriate- on the McCaffrey's own boards I
use my real name, which sounds like a fantasy
character anyway; on a couple RP's I use a random
character name. And here I started out, I think,
as "Riddle" but kept forgetting it. ^^; On eBay
I'm 'theweyrlady' because I originally signed up
for an account when I was 16 but completely
forgot the password, and now I can't get into the
account.

When I got my own domain name for my website, it
just seemed logical to make it "dragonweyr.com"
because where else would you find a weyrlady, but
in a weyr? ^_^ That domain is mine for the next
ten years, as a result of a promotion NS was
doing a while back.

And... that's about it. I love the name, it's
part of who I am. I respond to it just as
quickly as my real name, and a few of my friends
call me "Weyr" in real life. ^^; I also love
meeting people online who know where it came from-
while I'm not as deeply in love with Pern as I
once was, it's still an old favorite.
