In the summer of 2002, Cardcaptors (the infamous
Nelvana as-seen-on-WB-Kids dub) was still trying
to compete with the Japanese-language-only
subtitled VHS and DVD releases. Nelvana
made innumerable changes and cuts in making the
dub because of corporate anxiety caused by
"inappropriate" romantic attractions (Syaoran x
Yukito x Touya x Kaho x Sakura x Tomoyo, etc.).
In some cases, they even combined episodes to make
new adventures, so that it was technically
impossible to include the dub and sub on the same
DVD.
So it was cheaper dumb but accessible English
version vs. more expensive VHS/DVD with no English.
I did a snapshot of the Amazon.com sales rankings
to see how the two were competing. The results
(with some other recent releases for comparison) ...
Cardcaptors v. 8 (English dub) #8970
Pokemon: The Movie 3 (English dub) #6907
Cardcaptors v. 9 (English dub) #6654
CardCaptor Sakura (Japanese language only) v. 9 #1679
Atlantis: The Lost Empire (English: Disney
Studios) #1471
CardCaptor Sakura (Japanese language only) v. 10 #1171
I don't know how these rankings translate into
relative sales, but it's clear that the
Japanese-only CCS sub was radically outselling the
English-only Cardcaptors dub, which was a factor
in the relatively early demise of the latter.
Nelvana dubbed the entire series (except for the
second movie), which was shown on British and
Australian TV, but so far as I know most of these
dubs remain unreleased.
Cardcaptors ... the (thankfully) Lost Episodes!
