A big motivator me for buying production cels is
to own a piece of the anime... special scenes and
characters. I like to be able to look in an
anime, game, or even artbook and say "that's my
cel, I have a part of that!" It's as close as I
can come to touching something like a scene.
As someone with interest in the production
process and considering pre-production artwork to
be both beautiful and a piece of the anime, cut
cels and sketches still hold that appeal.
Reproduction cels don't have that draw. They
stand more on their artistic merit. I could just
as easily pick up a shitajiki or poster. Of
course, I like the cel medium so there is that
draw. I've picked up one or two reproductions
(both paint and machine) when they were
relatively inexpensive. Unless I wanted to
display cel art, I would probably shy away from
the more expensive ones. The ones I have are
beautiful in their own right and well done, but
don't have the same appeal as a production cel.
I don't see a repro has a 'fake cel,' but as
a 'repro cel' -- liscensed merchandise by the
studio/rights holders.
