Hi ly,
I truely do not mean this as a flame (I hate even
having to make this type of disclaimer -_-), but
I have to agree with Drac on this one. I almost
replied to this thread before, but it would have
basically been a "me too" post so I skipped it.
Anyway, I just reread your original post and it
seems to me you started out talking about your
personal experiences, etc. But soon (starting in
the second paragraph) it seemed to turn from 'I'
and 'my' to 'you' and 'we'. The part the I found
a little disturbing(and I think Drac did, too) is:
>>Substitute the word things with cels and
>>think about all the times you've sacrificed
>>food, rent, sleep, or sold other things just to
>>maintain a hobby. Frightening isn't it?
Yes, I would find that frightening. But, it
kinda assumes that everyone in this hobby does
this. Oh, I will admit to setting my alarm to
bid on something at 5 am before, but I wouldn't
say I sacrificed sleep. But as far as
jeopardising food, rent and other possessions I
need -- I (and I'm sure many/most other
collectors) haven't come close.
All I'm saying is it kinda took on a preachy tone
*IMHO*. These types of "I've seen the light"
posts often seem to have an implied "and you
should, too". This is just the gut reaction that
I had. I think the point is that I saw Drac's
post as a rebuttal: that it doesn't have to be
that way. I think she was just trying to prove
there are ways to enjoy this hobby without
falling into the traps that your post illustrated.
Sorry if I'm putting words in your mouth, Drac.)
But I want to end with saying (I hope you have
made it this far ^^;;) that after reading your
latest post, I understand your thoughts a little
better and that you were only talking about your
experiences, etc. It is sometimes not easy to
write down your feelings in a forum post and
ensure they come across as you originally
intended. I know I always have a hard time with
this and it is why I avoid posting sometimes --
I'm always a little afraid it will come across as
insulting.
