If it was a cel I absolutely adored, I would be happy to
see it up on ebay. Yes, happy, and I'm serious. Why?
because chances are even if this person who snagged the cel before me hadn't gotten it first, someone else would have,
and I would never have a chance to own it. By putting it
up on ebay they are giving me a chance to own a cel I would
otherwise never have been able to. I mean whats the
difference between seeing this cel for sale at a price you
would never pay, and seeing it in the hands of someone who
would never sell it to you? I love ebay for the simple
reason the person who wants an item most gets it. And
before someone says it just goes to the person with the
most money, I'd like to point out, if you're in to
collecting anime cels you're obviously not -poor- though
some of us may be financially better off than others.
While for one person they may be able to buy it from extra
cash they have on hand, and another would have to sell off
some cels to do it, it still boils down to if you have to
have it, you can get it.
A couple months ago there was a Garline cel up on Anime
Time at an absolutely fantastic price. If the lucky buyer
were to put it up on ebay I know the bidding would go way
higher in no time at all. And you know what, I would be
–thrilled- to see that cel up there tomorrow. (Please note
the buyer (someone on this forum who I think is great) has not done so, this is merely theoretical)
Now here comes the big HOWEVER.. however in this case with
the opening bid set as high as it is, it looks to me more
like this person is just looking to sell the cel for 150
and just using ebay as a way to access more buyers. But
you know what, that’s okay with me too. Did anyone ever consider as opposed to turning a profit, they are merely
selling the cel at what its worth to them? I have a
lovely cel of Rapier from Maze that was absolutely a steal
at less than fifty bucks. But does this mean if I ever
decide to quit collecting Maze(or suddenly need to raise
money for an unexpected expense) I should sell it at the
same price? I don’t think so. I would have paid three
times as much for that cel as I did, and there’s no way I’d
ever let go if it for less than that. My point in all
this: a cel is not always necessarily –worth- the same
amount it was bought for, and that worth changes from
individual to individual.
