A friend of mine has a now-6 year old Epson scanner, and
it's the best scanner I've ever used. Since I have yet to
buy a scanner(goddamn textbook costs!) I've been using
anything I can get. Most of my friends have the generic
stuff, the school labs are decent, but there are a few
that stick in my mind.
Mustek=A number of my friends have these. The only good thing about em is that they're cheap. After a year or so of use, they all experienced problems with their scanner. Irene's has a 40/60 chance of working. The bulb in Dan's has some wierd issue where a discolored bar appears in the middle of every scan in the exact same place. The list goes on.
Microtek=These scanners actually do a good job. They aren't like Epsons, which do an excellent job, but my main gripes about Microteks are the ultra poor software and slow scanning speeds. Microteks also have a knack for making very odd noises.
UMAX=The school lab got an ASTRA 120 USB. The colors can easily be corrected in photoshop with 1-2 steps. The lines could be a little bit crisper...I thought that UMAX was a pretty good brand.
Apple=Avoid these like the plague. One old b/w scanner I used has really nice image quality, but it's b/w(useless unless you have those b/w Atom Boy cels) and slow.
The only gripe with Epson scanners are the cost. They are expensive, but it's worth it. You get superior software packages and better hardware.
I'd like to get the Perfection 636, but I'm kind of broke right now.
