The "Cheap" Scanner Issue (Wed Jan 12 00:44:24 2000 )

If I was to go out today to purchase a new scanner I would do as
you recommend and "just stay away from consumer UMAX, MUSTEK, and
whatever generic things". This is based on my experience with my
Mustek 1200S which I've had for 3 years. It's image quality is fine
and the colors ARE correct, but it's just plain "dumb".
To save costs, it has no brain whatever. All the smarts are in the
software driver. This means that during the scanning process, the
computer has to spend 100% of it's time telling the scanner what to do.
The result is my computer is totally locked up during that period. I
assume that if I was to purchase a more expensive scanner such as an
Epson, that it would have some intellegence build in to it. Then the
computer would be free to do other things during the scanning process.
But, for the average user, waiting around twiddling their thumbs for
a couple minutes waiting on their scanner should be no big deal. But I
wouldn't recommend it for a cel dealer or someone who is frequently scanning
things.
