Using Cel Scans and Philosophy (Mon Oct 11 10:47:38 1999

I've been reading the many recent treads about people taking cel scans and I came up with a few thoughts which might be of interest (probably not ;) to others. First when you buy a cel that is all you get. Yann I believe was the one who correctly explained that you don't even get the right to make a copy of the cel. That means that when we scan in pictures of our cels we are making illegal copies. Of course we don't see it that way but that's legally how it works. It also makes it questionable for us to start shouting that someone has taken our image and is using it without permission. Sure it would be nice if they did ask but do they really need to? Consider why we put up galleries. Is the idea to share our treasures with everyone else who wasn't so lucky to be able to find or afford the cel we treasure or is it a way for us to just lord over other people all of our prize possessions? If we are putting up galleries out of the goodness of our hearts to share with everyone then what does it matter if they don't ask before taking the picture? It's not like they are stealing something and we are left with nothing. We put these things out there for them to enjoy so why should we get upset when they grab a copy of that picture, after all we still are in possession of the real cel. I'd really like to hear from those of you who have galleries. Why did you put them up and does it bother you when people use your scans without permission? |
