One thing special about anime cels... (Fri Dec 11 23:39:04 1998

This has NOTHING to do with prices, but unlike the US, Japan employs their own people for their animation. Living costs are high in Japan, and these people are paid well. That's partially behind the reason that Japanese videos and stuff cost a more. Although I must say that the damn publishers are responsible for most of the markup and then cels are treated as garbage that wastes storage space. Toei and Ghibli are the only studios I've really seen that respects their cels like artwork. The US has constantly been looking for cheaper and cheaper means to do thier animation. In the early 80s, sending character designs and animation directions to Toei was the most econimical way to go. I've seen Toei in many Rainbow Brite and My Litte Pony credits(don't ask me why I remember that fact.) I was perusing through a random magazine aimed at my demographic, something I rarely do I might add, but there was a special about how Daria was animated. Artists and directors in the US still do the pencils, but the sketches have coded areas so that a studio in Korea can play color-by-numbers all day for something not-even-close to min wage. Strange how American TV cels, with LESS artistic merit, sell for so much. |
