It is true that cel prices are governed by the market.
However, sometimes the market heads in a direction that only
benefits a select few. But what can we do about it?
Well, we can try to influence the market to keep prices
from escalating. As cel collectors, we can complain about
high prices and discourage other cel collectors from paying
high prices. Thus dealers who sell cels for high prices
won't sell anything, and as a result, they will either be
forced to go out of business or lower their prices.
Take the classic example of Disney. A few cels sold at
auction for record amounts $10K-100K. People saw how much
those sold for, and consequently raised their prices. Cels
that once sold at Disneyland at the Art Corner for a few
dollars each now commanded from $300-$3000. Why? Because
people who had the money to spend didn't mind spending it.
They were NOT smart shoppers. It was basically adults with
too much money (and nothing better to do) commercializing
a hobby. So no longer were cels something that kids could
collect. And this change was quite quick. |
