I'll sorta talk about all aspects of what's been
posted so far ^^'!
To answer Cel_newbie's question first:
Unfortunately for us companies are slowly marking
off cels in the production process, & converting
to all CG. The only actualy production material
we'll be able to buy is the original drawings,
gengas for the sequences. Some people might get
they're hands on actual storyboards, but most of
them are copied like what's being sold today.
The process of converting to CG seemed to be
going pretty slowly from the start. Now, most
new anime is all CG, but there is still some
using cels in there, be it for the whole series,
or just bits & pieces. All the new anime I've
been watching has been CG, & I have yet to see
any cels on the market for them.
Cels are going to rise in value(which they
already have over the past several years),
because all the HIGH QUALITY cels are going to be
coming from private collections. We see the
process already in full effect. Cels are going
to eventually run out, most collectors will drop
the hobby, & the hard-core collectors will be
shelling out the big bucks to get their hands on
some original production material.
Now, to answer on the other questions regarding
the artistic differences ^^':
Wether it be CG, or original hand-painted
cels...It's still art & being produced by human
beings in the end. I do however feel that cels
hold more of a value, since it was all hand-done
without the use of computers(which makes the
process easier). There's no mixing of paints a
thosand times over by hand making sure you have
the right tone, when you can just pull up your
saved palette that's on file, there's no
correction layers from human errors, etc...
It's like going to a fine art dealer & looking at
an Original Monet. Then the dealer tells you
over here is the high quality print made by a
computer. You have enough to buy either one, but
which would you choose?
Original artwork not produced by a computer is
always going to be worth more, & more treasured
than that produced on a computer. It's hard to
put into words to explain this fact. I can agree
with summerfox on her arguement that CG is still
as valued as hand-painted cels when it comes down
to the effort put in by humans & the fact that it
still is art, but I can agree with the other
sides that cels will always be better than CG. I
guess you can just say "It has a human touch to
it." No aid by the wonders of a computer, just
the blood, soul, & sweat mixed into the paint on
the canvas, wall, or cel.
I myself have been an artist for my whole life
(Was thrown into the Kansas Art Institute at the
age of 6 O_o!), & it's hard for me to produce my
art on a computer. It just doesn't feel "right"
to me. Granted it does make things easier
especially when I'm trying to color in an
illustrated sequence, but the "magic" for me just
isn't there. Placing a hand-stretched canvas in
front of me, laying out my hand mixed paints,
smelling the musky smell of the oils, getting
splatters of paint on my in the process...the
clean-up...Ruined clothes...The dancing of my
hand across the canvas...It just isn't the same
as sitting in a chair for 8+ hours a day,
clicking a mouse, & filling in color onto a pre-
loaded image, saving your file, & then going home
clean at the end of the day...Not the same at
all.
Anyway...Does anybody else see themselves in the
future...Watching an all CG show...staring at the
screen, & a BEAUTIFUL pan shot goes by the
screen, & you say to yourself..."Boy, that would
be NICE cel to have...Too bad I'll never get that
cel now because of the CG...Maybe I could get the
drawing if I'm lucky..."...
That's my thoughts anyway^^!
