My two cents.
WARNING: Do not read if you are not in for a long
rant and opinion coming for me!
I agree with the last poster. Even more so, in
that, CG or Computer colorized (or whatever the
terminology that anyone would prefer to
use),compared to hand painted cels are less of a
collectors item than ever before. It is so BORING!!
Why I say this is because with CG, only
sketches or layouts will be available (and dummy
reproduction cels for us) but, of course in most
cases, they still will not measure up to original
key cel or color hand painted cels, hankens
(maybe), or artwork, artist recognized,
production cels, etc. (IMO).
Going beyond that narrow scope, hanken mono,
original drawings,etc., will also actually
appreciate due to the very nature of the original
artistic talent of human beings original input
and creativity vs. computer graphic (nerd)
rendered by the number, mouse clickable",instant
art.
Cel art will indeed become more valuable on an
artistic level as never before IMO. And even if
it stays the same and ignores CG, all the
better!! I like to think positive!
However, it is destiny perhaps that I envision
both forms co-existing. CG drawings and concept
sketches, as well as, present or then future
past, hand painted anime cel art redentions. As
well as hand painted, anime art coming from other
countries, such as Korea. (I might be wrong)
If anime movies are pieced into CG with limited
hand-painted art, than those hand painted items
will be sought after. And their value wil rise.
Look at "Metropolice" as an example of CG vs.
Handpainted cels. The hand-painted cels are
expensive due to the lack of these cels, before
they hit the mainstream market. The same could be
said of Saiyuki (CG) rendered. If they had real
production cels, many more fans of that series
would be happy, instead of being offered sketches
and reproductions-ONLY
A lot of the main character art from Metropoice
is actually CG. I find that CG is unattractive
and not very sought after. I don"t really see
that changing, unless there are absolutely no
more hand painted cels to be had! Even then I see
collecting that CG art as mediocre at best.
Nothing is original about –“anyone can use”-
computer software, --anyone can do it art. PRESTO
I feel very confident that handpainted anime
cels will continue for many years to come to be
important collectible, and joy for many.
I feel contrary actually, that CG will face the
problem of not being valued enough. Even as I see
CG making it's way. I hear no Ohhs or awes.. I
hear,,"oh, yeah btw, that or this scene is CG" in
a disconcerting tone. I see no big parade or
cheer going up for CG at all. I see it's value as
a negative influence rather than positive.
I think that the present collectors are the lucky
ones. They are the one's that gain to benefit
from the artificiality of computer colorization.
I suggest that you get all you can while the
getting is good! I am. Okay rant over...
Thank you for your post.
Good luck,
E
