Interesting what CGC and the 'standardized'
grading system has done for auction prices, isn't
it? The entire inflated pricing issue made me
think of cels. Both markets not being that
uncommon once you take perspective.
Grading for cels? If it was done, I would think
it would have to consist of a two-fold grading
system as you are now dealing with,
although 'mass produced', original art.
1. Condition i.e. paint loss, line fading etc.
2. Aesthetics (I'll switch to that term as we
are now dealing with artwork per se) i.e. the
general view of 'A' level / 'B' level and so forth
Number one, I would imagine would bring down the
grade of quite a number of them. How many cels
have we received where the condition was, at
best, not so great, and at worst misrepresented?
Pros and cons to everything. I've seen people
pay outrageous prices for the graded comics over
non-graded even when the condition was the same.
Compatible markets make me wonder how long before
someone gives it 'a try.'
(note we haven't even mentioned the dreaded 'cel
authenticity' issue. I, for one, don't want to
be struck by lightening)
By the way, don't you think it's funny?
Eventually someone is going to want to take the
book out of its graded shell. What happens to
the 'official grading' then? And how would they
even encase a cel?
