Guess it's time for me to come out of the closet... (Wed Sep 1 03:58:55 2004 )

I'm 50. A real old guy....

Been collecting cels for a few years, and I have
been an active Anime fan since 1964.

I think that a lot of the sales and "getting out
of collecting" activity that we've been seeing is
a normal part of a hobby where the majority of
the collectors are young (under 25). Things
change really fast when one is younger: you move
onto new interests, redeploy your resources into
new areas, etc. frequently and easily. It's
pretty easy to "let go" of things when one
younger.

What worries me about the future of the hobby is
that I fear that young collectors are not coming
in to replace those who are leaving. Most new,
hot shows are CGI, so there are no cels for the
hot new shows to draw in new collectors.

I beleive that in few years, we collectors will
find that there is nobody out there who wants to
buy our cels for sale. The established
collectors already will have theirs, and there
will be no new collectors to provide liquidity to
the marketplace.

I don't think that will affect me much -- I have
a long-term commitment to my cels -- but it could
affect others who are still transitioning through
stages in their lives.
