To my knowledge, I've never unwittingly bought a
fake, but I've seen some before. Usually, I was
suspect from the beginning. In person the colors
might have been off, even slightly with respect to
each other. Some were even worse, as I knew the
magazine image they were copying from well and
could tell by the cut off or maybe even art
mistakes or even the size of the acetate that it
couldn't be the real one.
Online, I have more time to check things against
the real image so it's easier. However, some
looked really close and I had to rely on "perhaps
this is too good a deal... it might be real but I
would prefer to buy something that price from
someone I know would take it back if I discovered
it was fake." I don't want to buy and be stuck
with something that is just going to make me
worry. That isn't fun ^^
So, on the question of "who IS trustworthy," I
often think "who would take it back/refund without
hassle, if I found out." Of course, there are
some people I trust to almost never sell me
something that's fake, just based on their
experience and general knowledge and what I've
seen them sell in the past, but everyone can be
fooled once. It's hard for people to know all
series... all it takes is one bad link in the
chain of ownership.
