I'm doing some reasearch on the whole concept of
fake cels... NOT fan cels (I love fan cel
artists :) but cels that people try to pass off
as actual cels from the productions and succede
(sp).
When I first started collecting cels about a year
ago, I started small ($50 or so). I didn't know
anything about cel collecting (about 6 years ago
when I was 12 I used to collect Barbie dolls from
the 60's and 70's... Who's gonna fake a
Barbie! :P) and it never crossed my mind that
someone would or even COULD fake a cel. But let
me tell you, I've almost bought some high end
cels lately only to find out (After looking at
the screen shot for like an hour) that they're
fake. It's the little things that the person
missed in the cel that made me realise that they
were fake. This really freaked me out.
I mean someone can buy the real production cel,
and make an exact copy of it. I mean there are a
LOT of REALLY good artists out there! I was
reading an old issue of Newsweek (I think)
magazine and read this article about how this
guys fake paintings were selling at Sotheby's and
Christie's for sometimes $35 MILLION dollars. I
know that this is a lot more money than cel's,
but still... Most of us aren't rich and $3500 can
seem like $35 million. Money dosen't grow on
trees ya know ^_^
Basically what I would like to know is people's
experiences with "Fake Cels". How they found out
they were fake, how long till they realized, how
much they paid, who IS trustworthy to buy cels
from, etc. etc. etc.
Any help in my little information quest would be
greatly apreciated!
Sincerely,
Lani ^_^
