I think part of the problem is that a lot of
people, especially Americans, think they aren't
doing anything wrong. They may even think they're
being respectful and just don't get that some
other cultures actually find
appropriating "Ethnic" names to be offensive to
that culture. I've spent a lot of years on
various Native American Reservations here in the
States and have seen a lot of Non-N.A's taking on
N.A. names such as "White Feather" for example.
Mostly they really just trying to get into the
whole cultural experience and have no clue that
most tribes find this presumptous and offensive.
That could very well be the case with the people
deciding they must simply have "Japanese" names
if they're going to collect cels and don't
understand this can be confusing and might even
cause offense. |
