Wasting money...hmm (Sat Dec 7 09:09:47 2002 )

Before anyone takes notice:

It was a poorly worded question..sorry.

It is not "wasting money" at buying and
collecting your prized cels, of course not (that
is not what I meant, sorry if it came out that
way)--- But for selling later if need be, those
with the intent to sell DBZ cels later as a
backup plan, have to be disappointed--for now.

Some people are pure collectors (never selling
anything and completely satisfied), half-pure,
kinda pure, and not so pure in their "ideal" of
thinking of cels as a "non-refundable item".

And just to preface this:
This 'purity thing' that I am referring to has
nothing to do with collectors as people, okay.

However, on any given day, you can also look here
and see all of the many stories about people
letting go of their "babies" to try and raise
funds for x,y,and z. But I don't see many DBZ
collectors doing that. I do not see the "ebb and
flow", like it used to be. So, I wonder if it is
because it would not be "worthwhile" to do so. Or
are people really "in-love" with what they have?

On a slightly different note:

Many others are quite concerned about the price
of selling to raise more money for other
more "upscale" cels or more quantities or lesser
price cels. There are many factors to understand
why a person would want to hope that their cels
value not only stays constant but in fact rises
in value over time. Again, I do not see much of
that with DBZ.

Personally:

Btw,I have belonged to all of the above type of
collector groups on occasion. I wish that I could
be so great as to not ever think that each and
every cel in my collection is so wonderful, as to
never be concerned about the money I've spent,
even if market-wise they turn out to be worthless
dust. However, I haven't reached that pinnacle of
success for every cel in my collection yet,
except for a few series. But, that is my
eventual goal. I am getting close to being
satisfied.

"My buds":

Another thing is, getting back on topic, that now
that those type of cels are much cheaper, I see
some of my ol'buddies included, the people that
used to buy DBZ cels when they were expensive as
heck, haven't gobbled up the cheaper priced ones
now. So, I wonder why?

I see Mirai Trunks cels going for miraculously
lower prices now. Is there a "Loss of Luster"
when the price drops? Or have collectors from
years past reached their own saturation point and
demand is down?

Responding to a previous post on this thread:

I can understand the "economic issues", but it
doesn"t seem to have hurt some series value at
all. (AMG cels, as an example)

 So, that doesn't explain everything.

It could also be the demographics. The age and
economic status of the buyers could be more
unstable (money) with DBZ, Slayers, etc. than
other cel buying groups.

Of course the cel community is not as large as it
may appear either. So, if there are say 5-10
major (hard-heads) on a DBZ feeding
frenzy "banging heads" using their desire with
money in turn driving up the value, could also
explain some raise in prices specifically first
with auctions and then cascading down to dealer
sites; and then later, hit a drop-off later point
too when everyone is finally exhausted their
resources. Or simply, when they stop buying from
the series. In turn, dealers then begin to have
BIG sales on their sites to cut overhead. I guess
timing is everything.

Of course, this is all just speculation.

Disclaimer:

I don't want to be pessimistic or optimistic.
I am just being an observer. I used to collect
DBZ/GT too, so I am not anti-Z or hater or
anything.

Ciao!
