Hi,
here are my answers to your questions -
interesting poll, I spent time reading everyone's
opinion and learnt a lot.
(1) I just sold 1 cel in 4 years collecting. I
currently own approximately 20 cels and don't
plan to sell them - well, maybe 2 or 3 but not
more, and I have plenty of time for that, it's
not like I needed the money. Anyway, here is what
I believe concerning the fact that many people
are selling their cels: I think there was
recently a brand new generation of cel
collectors, mainly people from the US who
discovered japanese animation through famous
series like Dragonball Z. But this generation was
versatile, and now feels the need to find a new
hobby. They were not "real" collectors - that is
those who know they will probably never quit the
hobby (even if they buy very few cels they keep
theirs), just "occasional" collectors...
(2) no, the international situation had no
influence on me. I fact right now I am almost
over and done with my studies. I'm beginning to
earn money so I think I'll be able to spend more
money on cels - if I want to: I have to define
priorities, but that's another story...
(3) Since no new production cels will be made,
the collectors will have to collect only "old"
ones. But cels suffer from line-fading,
especially those made for series because the
materials used are cheaper. Already it's hard to
get a cel in good condition of series that are 15
years old. I believe collectors won't spend money
to restore cels that are not valuable, so the
cheaper cels will just finish in bins. In the end
only cels from series that will have entered the
history of animation will remain - a few series
and most movies probably. Those ones will
probably become extremely expensives. Some
Princess Mononoke cels already can be sold for as
much as $5000...
(4) I don't know personally anyone else who is
collecting cels. I just have a friend who
discovered my collection and had the will to get
a cel from a character he loved very much when he
was a kid. So he has one cel and that's all.
