1. I have only a few cels for sale, and those
mainly because I don't want them in my collection
anymore, for various reasons. If they don't sell, I
don't mind, because it's not urgent that I try to
turn them into cash. Most of them have been for
sale for almost a year, so why now? They haven't
sold yet.
2. The socio-economic times really haven't changed
how I collect, except it seems I have to filter
through a lot more low-end stuff before I can find
anything I'm interested in. At the risk of sounding
"snooty", I pretty much have all the low-end cels
I'm interested in. Once in awhile I'll purchase
one, but at this point, I'd rather save the funds
and energy for exactly the cels I'm looking for.
I've also noticed that a lot of the "low end" cels
are not at what I would consider "low end" prices
appropriate to the current cel market. If you
bought at the height of the market, you are almost
never going to recoup that purchase price. This is
the way of most collectables.
3. I expect that cel collecting is going to become
a niche hobby. I expect that high end cels from
anime series/movies that maintain their popularity
will be the only items that maintain their value,
and the rest won't.
I base this on talking with a number of newer fans
of anime, who are watching series that are pretty
much all CG. Cels aren't available from the series
they're interested in, so the idea of purchasing
cels doesn't even cross their mind. And the series
that were done in cels are considered "old stuff".
I admit it doesn't bother me, because I bought my
cels for me to enjoy. If I don't plan on selling
them, I don't really care if anyone else in the
universe would want them.
4. I have never had many other friends who collect
cels or who are in the cel collecting community,
but the two I have are pretty much retired
completely. I'm not sure either of them has bought
a new cel in the past year or so. As far as I know,
one has quit due to finding other interests, and
one has quit due to needing to spend time on the
other aspects of his/her life.
