There was one instance where I lost an auction on
a set of those "copy sketches" and the seller
wrote, offering to make a copy for me before
sending them to the high bidder. So I have no
doubt that some of these copy sets are copies
made outside the studio. Of course, to me (and I
own very few of these) the only value of the
copies is to see design details. Sometimes they
have handwritten notes on them, but this seems to
be rare.
As I understand it, there *is* only one original
set. If you think about it, having only one
original makes sense since it's meant to be used
as an official reference. . . So you would want
to make sure that everyone was looking at exactly
the same thing. I'm sure the number of studio-
made copies would vary by the size of the team
working on the show in question.
