you might want to reassess your previous claim,
"Cars depreciate 25% as soon as you drive them
off of the lot. Cels don't!". True cels don't
necessarily depreciate 25% by the time you buy
them. BUT do remember by the time most of us get
cels they aren't NEW, let alone current in the JP
market. Most of whats hot in the U.S. today isn't
hot in JP at anymore. Hence while the cels you
purchased might not appear to have depreciated
they're market for potential resale (as any
indicator of their popularity and profitability)
has decreased and this will CONTINUE to DECREASE
with the passage of time. Few series still
command a high dollar as they did when they first
were released. Lets take AMG Ah! Megami-sama as
an example. When the OVAs were first released it
was white hot in Japan AND later likewise in the
U.S.;now the movie has been released cool, but in
five years time do you think the same cels that
commanded high dollar value will be able to do
the same? Realistically no. Another great example
is Escaflowne, the TV series cels are pretty much
done, you don't see many new ones and the turn
over is pretty small. The movie was well timed
and plenty of the movie cels commanded top
dollar, but now not only can one not find
anything, but what one does find is arguably not
worth the asking price. People aren't willing to
pay the overpriced amounts for Esca movie cels or
TV cels very often anymore. Its been well over
four years since Esca TV came out how well do you
think honestly, that it will do in the terms of
resale value in five more? Not very well at all.
The same could easily be said about Urusei
Yatsura, Maison Ikkou, Ranma, Tenchi, Sailor
Moon, DragonBall,et al. Its my opinion disagree
with it if you will, that cels DO DEPRECIATE in
value, these aren't Disney or Flischer cels were
talking about. The market which one shouldn't
overlook is what dictates the value of XYZ cel
and the market shrivels up more often than not
with the passage of time. Think about it. |
