*Especially if* the studios sold them, not *only
if*. As far as cels that weren't officially
released go, many were given away *by the studio*
to outsiders and to people who worked on the
film. No one broke into the studio in a catsuit
and cracked the vault and took them. These given
away cels then belong to whoever they were given
to and if that person sells them, they belong to
the person who buys them.
For some reason people have this concept of
"stolen" cels that I don't understand. Obviously,
the studios are not stupid. They know that their
employees are asking for these things and then
turning around and selling them. The fact that
they weren't released officially only means that
the studio didn't want to go through the hassle
of a public auction or sale, or they want to keep
demand up since that does in fact turn around and
draw attention to the original film, etc, etc.
Like I said, we're not talking about someone
breaking in and stealing the Mona Lisa, then
selling it and the buyer claiming ownership
because they paid for it. That's comparing apples
to oranges.
