If I had to guess they probably will switch to
both a combo of digital and traditional animation
techniques, if they switch at all. This seems to
be what most Japanese studio houses have seem to
do. The one's that have supposedly switched
entirely to CG still use some cels for certain
shots and effects.
As has been pointed out in previous e-mails,
digital does not do a good job for all situations
and traditional animation can become exorbinately
expensive to do for certain shot time (for ex,
character and background both moving). What we
will probably see for a good number of years is
both techniques being used. However, the advent of
digital animation and its growing populatity
with Japanese executives (mostly because of cost
custing) is definitely signaling the end of large
amounts of cels being used in Japanese animation
productions.
