I believe the seller in Japan is the one you need 
to contact about the insurance.  Since it is 
insured through EMS, the US post office has 
nothing to do with it.  It doesn't matter if you 
opened the package in from of them or not, I'm 
pretty sure, since the claim isn't filed with 
them.
