Re: What's wrong with re-selling anyway? (Fri Jun 1 19:38:08 2001 )

Oh, come on. People get upset at the reselling
practice for other things as well, *not* just
cels as you're stating.

Remember when that evil Pokemon was hot? Or
furbies? Comic book shop dealers or other
people who own collectable stores would rush to
Target/WalMart/wherever as soon as they opened
to grab up all of the "hot" items at a decent
price... and then that same day would mark them
up 2, 3, 4 times over cost and stick them up for
sale in their stores. (This caused a bigger
shortage on an already hot item.) Do you think
collectors thought this was a great idea and
a boost for the market? Absolutely not! Many
(most? I'd hope) of us said Hell would freeze
over before we bought a furby for 3 or 4 times
over original retail price. This didn't stop
some people, of course, who either had really
spoiled children or "had to have" the ugly little
critters, as happened with the PS2 craze this
past Christmas, but a lot of people just left
the market alone... and look? PS2 can be found
everywhere now, sitting on the shelf "for sale,"
and even this "hot" item will have to take a
fall in price before it reels in more suckers.

I think a lot of collectors get more upset at
seeing cels purchased *online*, where we all
have access to them!, and then "resold" on eBay
or elsewhere at a huge markup as a "hard to find"
item. What service is the seller doing for us?
Occasionally people buy something (online or
otherwise) and realize later that it wasn't what
they wanted, the cel looks different in person,
or they found something they wanted more and
needed to free up the cash... understandable,
I think. But for someone to CONSTANTLY buy and
resell at a 4, 5, 6 times markup *just* to make
a profit (even worse in my mind when these
speculators don't care a whit about the hobby)
... that leaves a bad taste in my mouth.

And no, I don't buy "collectables" from comic
book shops or little collectable stores. I
know what they paid originally, and they're not
doing me a favor, they're padding their pockets...
and it makes me sick to see a toy sitting on a
shelf in Target for $5 and then sitting on the
shelf at the same time in a comic book store
for $19.99.

Just my two cents.
