FINGERNAILS??? WINDOW CLEANER??? I think my next project needs to
be a tutorial on how to safely clean cels. And I would use nothing
abrasive like a fingernail. I admit that if one is very very careful,
it might be OK. But I much prefer to use a cotton swab, or something similar.
As for window cleaner, there are too many brands with different ingredients
to just say "window cleaner". I would NOT use anything that included amonia on
the list.
What I use is Alcohol. The 100 percent pure dehydrated kind that must be purchased
from a chemical supply store. The alcohol will not damage the cel material. But it
does easily desolve paint and ink. I make one pass with a cotton swab dipped in
alcohol, followed by another couple passes with cotton swabs dipped in purified
water, followed lastly by a dry swab.
Be sure to inspect the cel carefully before allowing alcohol to touch it. Sometimes
the front of a cel will have touch-up ink lines on it. One pass with an alcohol dipped
swab, and those lines will be history.
