In Japan, the people who work in the anime studios don't
make much money comparing to the other similiar fields, like
video game studios. And they often have long hours and
poor working environment. In order to survive the expensive
livings in Japan, some lower ranked people in the anime
studios, like cel painters or in-between frame animators
will often try to take some cels out after the production,
so they can re-sell them to dealers or collectors,
especially the series that the studios don't
normally distribute to the public, like Pokemon or
Evangelion. They just want to make some extra money to
help out their livings. Sometimes, their bosses just
let them to take a few because they understand these
guys need some extra bucks. Sometimes, the studios
give them to the staffs as rewards.
The reason that some studios destroy the cels are sometimes
due to the investors of the shows. For example, Evangelion
has numerous big investors and its merchanise licenses
between different companies often causes problems,
especially for cels, they're not really products like toys
or stationaries, cel is a just a by-product during the
