Well, I think that the picture is bigger than
that. It is about business too. Look at the
demographics. How many cel collectors (in the
States) are college aged or students in college?
I would argue that at least 50% or more. And how
much would a 10% discount really hurt a dealer? I
wouldn't think too much, since "some" dealers are
making a great markup on what they sale anyway.
It would be good PR for the dealer = potentially
more customers. I think everybody wins. Yes,
working people with kids and whatnot (myself
included) would pay regular cost. Think about it,
anime afterall is originally for mostly a teen
audience anyway! To me it would only make sense
to give that "majority inpoverished" group a
little nudge over. I argue that it would also
entice a customer to come back (repeat sales)
which makes only good business sense.
Again, I think everybody wins.
And anime IS an "educational" media art. I teach
it here in a Japanese high school as an elective
course. I expose students, yes Japanese students,
to anime that they have never seen before.
I "give away" cels sometimes as rewards to good
anime students to inspire them even more. I think
that it is postive and a good thing in general.
Most people have never seen a real cel up close.
Maybe I am thinking too optimistically, but that
is just me. Also, everyone grown-up, student,
family rearing, or not has their own set of
priorities. It could also be argued that "grown
up" working people with families and such, should
not be buying anime cels either. If you have
children to raise, feed, and educate then why
would a person be spending all of their extra
money on anime cels? That is just another way to
look at it. Students on the other are very free
to concentrate on themselves without too much
thought of others. And many students that collect
anime are involved in visual arts of some type
anyway. I just think the pie is big enough for
everyone to share, even the little guys ^-^ |
