Is there ever a point where cels...are just way too much? (Thu Aug 29 21:05:36 2002 )

And I'm not talking about that I can't afford it
or anything. I learned early on that sometimes
you win, sometimes you lose. In fact, I've
basically stripped my wishlist of cels I know
I'll never be able to afford. Sometimes it's all
about who has the money.

But there are times, too, when I stare at an
image and think to myself, "That's
just...ridiculous!"

Fushigi Yuugi is probably one of the best
examples recently. Now, part of it has to do
with the fact the market is beginning to dry out,
but all the same, it's getting expensive. For
example, on the recent Animegame update, a cel of
evil Tamahome sold for $980.

...........

Now, I can understand that evil Tamahome is a
much beloved character, not on my wishlist, but
assuredly on the lists of many a collector. What
really surprises me about this is the fact that
Fushigi Yuugi's artwork isn't all that
wonderful. Yes, I love the show, and the
character designs are nice, but even I'll admit
that the animation isn't really on par with most
other animes.

Don't get me wrong--it was a lovely action shot,
and I extend my congratulations to whomever
picked it up. Great find! But still...it made
me blink. (Nuriko, even moreso, drives me
insane.)

So here's my question:

When does a cel's price become too outrageous for
you? Keep series popularity in mind here. If a
series ever came to a point where it just blew
you away, would you keep collecting it? Just out
of curiosity.

I'm not going to stop collecting Fushigi Yuugi
myself, but I'm also going to make more cuts to
my wishlist. Because, quite frankly...sometimes
it's just way too much.
